Each year, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School seeks to recognize a deserving candidate from our school family to be the recipient of the Mother Seton Award. The Mother Seton Award was created to honor those individuals whose volunteer service and dedication to home, school, and church has been exemplary.
Mrs. Corey Toups, our 2015 Mother Seton Award recipient, was born a Blue Jay; baptized and married at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. After spending time in Austin, Texas as a teacher, she moved back to Baton Rouge, teaching at another local Catholic school for 4 years and then stayed at home with her small children for another 4 years. Shere-planted her family roots at Mercy when her triplets became school age. Married at Our Lady of Mercy 24 years ago by Fr. Cleo Milano, Shaun and Corey now have eight beautiful children, four of whom are currently enrolled at Our Lady of Mercy School.
As a college student, Mrs. Toups first offered her service talents assisting the Director of Religious Education at the time as a Vacation Bible School teacher, helped with Confirmation retreats, and CCD classes. In her time spent at OLOM School, she has served as Room Mom, assisted in Kindergarten classes during center time, Cafeteria service, Parent Volunteer and Chaperone for Edge, served as Facilitator for Come Lord Jesus, was a member of the Long Range Strategic Planning Core Team, and assists with special projects such as Open House, Grandparent’s Day and various other school events.
Her service role by no means ends with the school; she has dedicated her precious time to the church as Vacation Bible School Coordinator, was a key player in the team that founded Called by Faith (a women’s Bible study), serves on the Bereavement Committee, and is also a current member of the Pastoral Council.
The Our Lady of Mercy community proudly names Mrs. Corey Toups this year’s OLOM recipient of the Mother Seton Award. Mrs. Toups was honored at a reception on April 21 along with other Diocesan Mother Seton Award winners. Mrs. Toups’ character is the personification of our school’s motto, “Prayer, Knowledge, and Service,” for parishioners, parents, faculty, staff, and students. The Mercy Community is pleased to recognize this very deserving Christian woman, who is rooted in strong Catholic values, and has a selfless, humble dedication to our parish.
