Serving others through the eyes of our Blessed Mother is the aspiration of Our Lady of Mercy School’s Mary’s Club members. The club was started by the Salesian Sisters during the 1970s as an extracurricular for young ladies to guide them in loving our Blessed Mother more deeply.
Mary’s Club eventually disappeared from campus life but thanks to the efforts of the OLOM School Religion Teacher, Ms. Sherri Montagnino and her amazing team of volunteers (OLOM School Teachers Ms. Delilah Tibbetts, Ms. Tonya DeSoto, and Ms. Andrea Hulse), Mary’s Club livened up the campus once again nearly seven years ago, welcoming girls in grades second through eighth to participate.
One of the most memorable and exciting service projects each year occurs during 40 Days for Life. Members of Mary’s Club pray a group rosary inside the church, then host a baby shower for expectant mothers. The gifts that are collected by the group are donated to Catholic Charities’ Sanctuary for Life.
Longtime Mary’s Club member, Gabrielle Montagnino (OLOM Class of 2016) describes the goal of the club as a way to grow closer to Jesus through Mary. When the club was reestablished on campus seven years ago, it started with twenty members. Today the club has grown to over seventy members. With the help of her volunteer team, Montagnino also offers a Mary’s Club summer camp each year. Activities include daily Mass, a tour of the church, fun crafts, guest speakers, and daily lessons.
