This June 1st-8th will mark the second time a group of teens, young adults, and adults from Mercy will venture from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to the Haitian coastlands for a Mission Trip.
Back in January of 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck just 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. Life Teen immediately sent multiple missions trips to the country to aid in the rebuilding efforts. At the time, there was no Catholic Youth Ministry at all in Haiti, and after many earnest appeals to Life Teen from the Bishop of Haiti, the St. John Paul II Center for the New Evangelization was founded.
Our group will have many opportunities to encounter Christ in the poor. They will visit an orphanage in the Haitian mountains, travel to pockets of communities that have been forgotten and abandoned by the rest of the Haitian community, spend a day doing prison ministry, and making many home visits to bring food to local families, among daily opportunities to play basketball, soccer and other games with the Haitian children.
At the same time, they will have a daily morning holy hour, daily Mass, evening faith-sessions, and many opportunities to dive into not only meeting Christ in the Haitian Community, but also Christ in their own hearts and individual lives. This is what makes this mission trip life-changing.
Please keep in your prayers our 2018 Haiti Mission Trip Team: Amelia Gallagher, Warren Dazzio, Albert Blount, Reid Lejeune, Caroline Dazzio, Parker Wilson, Lucy Laville, Olivia Clark, Will Lott, and Tyler Turner.
We look forward to their return and for the chance to hear their many stories! And as the Haitians like to say, “Mesi Bondye, Mesi!” or “Thank you, God, Thank you!”
